The Sky Ranche property lies in the heart of the Mountain Bridge Wilderness, an ambitious landscape-scale conservation vision first conceived by Naturaland Trust founder Tommy Wyche over 50 years ago. Wyche recognized that the high-elevation forests and cold headwater streams of the Blue Ridge escarpment were both ecologically exceptional and vulnerable to fragmentation. Sky Ranche is a direct expression of that original mission: protecting clean water, native biodiversity, and large unbroken forest blocks that connect Table Rock, Caesars Head, Jones Gap, Raven Cliff Falls, and the greater escarpment. Securing this tract continues a legacy of conservation that has defined the Upstate’s natural heritage and outdoor identity.

The property encompasses 126 acres of intact montane forest and 8,443 linear feet of high-quality headwater streams that flow directly into the South Saluda River, an important cold-water trout stream in northern Greenville County. Situated along Table Rock Road and Sky Ranche Road, the tract sits just east of Table Rock State Park and near the protected Greenville Watershed, forming a natural extension of one of the most ecologically significant conservation landscapes in South Carolina. To the north, Sky Ranche adjoins the Asbury Hills Methodist Camp, which is permanently protected by a conservation easement held by The Nature Conservancy, and to the south it lies just above the 1,100-acre Saluda Bluffs property recently protected and transferred to SCDNR. Its protection strengthens a continuous corridor of conserved land that supports wildlife movement, watershed integrity, and the scenic character of northern Greenville County.

The conservation values of Sky Ranche are significant. Its forested ridges shelter migratory and resident wildlife and provide essential connectivity across the Blue Ridge foothills. Its streams feed the South Saluda River, helping sustain cold-water habitat that supports trout and contributes to downstream water quality. The property also offers stunning views of Table Rock and the surrounding escarpment, maintaining the scenic rural character of an area increasingly pressured by growth. Without protection, Sky Ranche is vulnerable to subdivision and development, as similar forested parcels in the region have been converted into dispersed home sites, fragmenting habitat and altering the landscape.

This vulnerability was made clear earlier this year during the Table Rock Complex Fire, when Sky Ranche was on the front lines of active wildfire containment. The property’s unbroken forest and lack of home development on the ridges enabled firefighters to manage the fire more safely and effectively. Protecting Sky Ranche will continue to support community resilience by reducing future wildfire risk, protecting ridgeline access for suppression, and preventing the challenges that arise when homes are scattered across steep, fire-prone terrain. By conserving Sky Ranche now, we protect clean water, wildlife habitat, scenic mountain views, and the integrity of one of South Carolina’s most important conservation landscapes. This acquisition reinforces a legacy of stewardship, strengthens the ecological and cultural fabric of northern Greenville County, and ensures that the Mountain Bridge Wilderness remains a living, connected, resilient landscape for generations to come.
