The Piedmont Riverfront Park project will protect 5.8 acres along the Saluda River in the historic mill community of Piedmont, creating new public greenspace within walking distance of downtown. This stretch of riverfront is one of the few remaining undeveloped access points along the Saluda River, and its protection will secure passive recreation opportunities for local residents, including many who currently lack close-to-home access to natural recreation. The property includes mature riparian forest, floodplain habitat, and more than one-third of a mile of river frontage. Once conserved, the site will serve as an anchor for future greenway connections, linking neighborhoods to the river. Greenville has been a blueprint for this kind of transformation based on the connection of a community to the river that runs through it. Protecting this land now prevents private development along the riverbank, maintains water quality, and preserves one of the most visible and ecologically important gateways into the community.
Greenville County is donating an additional 3.7 acres of neighboring floodplain land, and a private landowner is donating a conservation easement with permanent public access over 2.3 acres of adjacent riverfront, bringing the total protected greenspace to more than 11 acres. We are also looking at adjoining lands to the north to expand this block of land in the coming years. Together, these lands secure a continuous block of riparian forest and floodplain, which play a critical role in absorbing stormwater, reducing erosion, filtering runoff, and supporting the long-term health and resilience of the Saluda River. Protecting this corridor not only safeguards habitat for fish, birds, and other wildlife, but also helps downstream communities by maintaining natural flood storage and water quality functions.
Securing the 5.8-acre parcel is the key that allows these combined protections and public access commitments to function as a unified riverfront park managed by the Piedmont Public Service District. As surrounding areas continue to grow and redevelop, ensuring that residents can walk to the river, gather, spend time in nature, and maintain a connection to the landscape that shaped Piedmont’s history is an investment in the community’s identity, health, and future. This project preserves ecological function while creating a welcoming public space at the heart of town, one that will serve the community for generations.
